September 2013 IWSG

Hey everybody! So today being Wednesday means it’s time again for IWSG!

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group is a wonderful place where writers can share their worries and failures as well as their successes and advice. Led by our fearless leader Alex J. Cavanaugh, IWSG meets the first Wednesday of every month and you can join on his site here.

So this week I want to ask all you lovely folks out there about creativity, and to put a twist on a used and abused question we writers get all the time, I want to ask you, not where you get your inspiration, but where you get your creativity. Or rather, how do you feed your creativity? At a writer’s group about a year ago, I got talking to a gal about getting those creative juices flowing and she said that she loved pottery and that when she worked on her pottery that she found she had more creativity to put towards her writing as well. I suppose you could translate that into something along the lines of: Creative things breed more creativity. Whether that’s true or not remains to be seen, but I wanted to see what all of you found helped you tap into your creativity and apply it towards your writing. Let me know in the comments below and thanks for stopping by and reading! ^^ J

  1. Music is a great conduit for my creativity. If I am stuck in something I try to play music that matches my characters feelings and let that spark the creativity.

Also, road trips, beaches, and country roads spark my creativity. But I don't get to travel as much as I would like!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Shelly! I'm finding that music is a great idea, but I definitely have to agree that traveling helps too. ^^

  2. Life seems to provide a lot of creativity. Music, films, overheard conversations. The source is indeed endless. In fact, sometimes I have to ignore it.

Happy IWSG, Amanda. Welcome to IWSG.

  3. Music definitely feeds my creative juices. When I listen to music I associate certain parts of my story with the music and it expands in my head. I love to write when I find the right music.

  4. Star gazing, talking to people, and Oregon. Oregon feeds me with its beautiful scenery. Right now the wind is howling. I think summer just ended...

    1. Oregon is so full of beautiful inspiration isn't it? And yes, I think summer has definitely checked out for 2013. :]

  5. I listen to music, read great books and make collages to represent my stories. All of which are kind of directly related to my writing process. Outside of those things, I like people watching.

Welcome to IWSG! Nice to meet you!

  6. Life itself feeds our creativity. So does nature. I find music, meditation and long walks very effective in tapping into my creativity.

  7. I've been curious to try tapping into a different side of my creativity by taking a sculpture or drawing class, just to see what happens. So often writing feels like work and not fun the way it used to when I was a kid.

As of now, the two things that really help me reconnect are getting out of the house (I work from home) and having a long bubble bath where I can relax and think.

Great post! If you do take a class, let me know how it goes. ISWG members unite! :)

    1. Hello Holli! I'm sorry to hear that writing isn't as fun as it used to be. Sometimes when I'm editing it seems like more work than fun, but the end result is always so worth it, right?
I'm finding that getting out of the house is really helpful. I think sometimes it's easier to stay inside and feel productive than to get out and really feed our creativity sometimes. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I would say life in general. Hearing a story, watching a movie, listening to music, reading, daydreaming. I get ideas all day long!

  9. Where do I get my creativity? I think it's an innate thing we're born with. I first found out I was talented at fiction when I told the cops an elaborate story about how I couldn't possibly be the kid at the park who was playing with the pay phone. I was six. I thought 911 needed a quarter.
